Russia knocks out USA - again
Just like last season Russia eliminated USA from the World Junior Championship. The Russians won today's quarter-final meeting 3-2.
Russia qualifies for the World Junior Championship semi-final after a 3-2 win over USA in Montreal. Ivan Barbashyov, Alexander Sharov and Sergei Tolchinski scored for the winning side.
"This win means a lot for us," says Barbashyov to IIHF.com. "The whole of Russia was watching this game."
USA took a couple of early penalties and Barbashyov used a 2-man advantage to make it 1-0 on a rebound after 2:31 of play. Sharov got the puck with a bit of luck later in the first period and backhanded it home for 2-0.
The first period saw five American penalties but no Russian. In the second it evened out and when USA got to play 5-on-3 Anthony DeAngelo needed only 17 seconds to score.
Tolchinski took Russia back to the 2-goal lead when he scored a power-play goal at 41:27. USA outshot Rusia 20-5 in the third period but only scored once. Zach Werenski made it 2-3 at 48:56.
