11 May 2014 | Henrik Lundqvist
For the second game in a row Thomas Oppenheimer wins it for Germany with a penalty shot. This time in the third period. Yesterday in the shootout.
The game between Germany and Latvia was tied at two with a few minutes remaining. Then Georgijs Pujacs hooked Thomas Oppenheimer who was awarded a penalty shot. Oppenheimer beat Latvian goalie Kristers Gudlevskis five-hole and Germany got the second win in as many games.
"It feels pretty good to score them but you always need a little bit of luck with a penalty shot," Oppenheimer said to IIHF.com after the game.
The teams scored a goal each in each of the first two periods. Marcel Noebels opened the scoring for the Germans at 12:15. Six minutes later Georgijs Pujacs leveled the score.
Just thirty seconds into the middle third Frank Mauer took Germany to the lead once again and also this time it took less than seven minutes for Latvia to reply when Mikelis Redlihs beat Philipp Grubauer in the net for 2-2.
But Latvia couldn't reply a third time. They pulled Gudlevskis and called a time-out towards the end but it wasn't enough.
