A three-point night from Ash Goldie and Joel Champagne helped the Clan on their way to a lead heading into the second leg on Saturday night.
Neil Trimm opened the scoring late in the opening frame before adding a second on the powerplay midway through the second period.
Two minutes after the Clan took a 2 - 0 lead, Ash Goldie found the net, and a fourth from Joel Champagne in the third gave the Clan the win and left the Panthers a mountain to climb on Saturday night.
Nottingham are no strangers to comebacks, after going into the second leg of the challenge cup semi-final with a 5 - 2 deficit against the Belfast Giants, a 4 - 1 shootout win thanks to Petr Kalus earned the Panthers their fifth straight challenge cup win.
