Dornbirn, Bolzano double
10 Mar 2014 | Alan Ilijic
Bolzano expectedly lead 2-0 against the Hungarian SAPA, Dornbirn gets to the verge of a huge upset. Villach and Linz level the series' scores.
Dornbirn
Bulldogs - Red Bull Salzburg 5:4 (Dornbirn lead series 2-0)
After
a slow start from the favorites, the underdogs Bulldogs build on the lead which
proves unreachable for the Bulls. Martin Mairitsch and Brett Sonne each scored
a goal in the first period, the latter on the powerplay, and shock the visitors
from Salzburg.
They
didn't show signs of stopping in the second period through it was in the last
six minutes that four goals were scored. Graham Mink picked up a double as
Dornbirn fly to a 4:2 lead after 40 minutes. At 3:0 Konstantin Komarek and Mark
Cullen score for the regular season leader.
James
Arniel seals the deal early in the third getting the game winner. Salzburg come
from behind, but only a goal shy of overtime - Thomas Raffl and Garrett Roe
found their way in the 50th and 54th minute respectively.
Young
Slovene Luka Gracnar was again in net and like the first time two days ago
won't have best memories from the game. On the other hand, Adam Dennis made 34
saves leading his team to another win.
SAPA
Fehervar - Bolzano Foxes 2:4 (Bolzano lead series 2-0)
Bolzano
continue to dominate over SAPA this season. After a win in Italy two days ago
they doubled in Hungary as well proving journeys are no problems for them.
Ziga
Pance and Alexander Egger opened the scoring in the first period, Sebastian
Piche adds another one late in the seconda nad midway through the third frame
Hannes Oberdorfer finishes SAPA off setting
the final score 4:2. Bryan McGregor picks up two points scoring a goal in the
second and assisting Andrew Sarauer in the third, a minute before Bolzano
scored their last tally.
Villacher
SV - Vienna Capitals 5:2 (Series tied at 1)
A
slow start and a defeat in the capital didn't startle Villach. They show teeth
from the early beginning at home and by mid-second period the question of who
stays alive got the answer.
After
two penalties for Vienna early in the game, Villach had a 5-on-3 advantage on
the ice, couldn't capitalize but soon after both returned, Brock McBride scores
for the lead in the 7th minute. John Hughes and Patrick Platzer both got a goal
and with those two quick tallies Vienna were left stunned and couldn't
retrieve.
As
Rafael Rotter gets the Caps on the board midway through the second, Curtis
Fraser answers on a powerplay at 46:59. Jonathan Ferland scores a powerplay
tally at 56:31, but in the final minute of the game Derek Ryan finishes Vienna
off with an empty-netter.
Jean
Philippe Lamoreaux led Villach between the pipes with a saves percentage of
92%.
Black
Wings Linz - Orli Znojmo 6:5 OT (Series tied at 1)
Just
like Vienna - Villach, this series is tied and action-packed. Another
goal-galore following a 4:3 win in overtime in Znojmo, only this time Linz find
their spot under the sun.
Gregor
Baumgartner gets the game winner 4:30 into overtime to finish the game on the
assist from Andrew Hedlund. A bombastic start to the game promised for an
entertaining game. At 2:04 it was already 1:1, Ondrej Fiala opening in the
first minute of the game, Patrick Spannring ties it, but them Jason Ulmer turns
the game around and scores on the powerplay at 8:56.
With
goals from Brian Lebler, Daniel Oberkofler and Patrick Leahy, Znojmo find
themselves with a mountain in front trailing 5:3 prior to going into the third
frame. Antonin Boruta and Michael Kolarz scored for Orli in a period marred by
roughing penalties - a total of 24 on both sides. At 22:36 Orli missed a
penalty shot.
Jan
Lattner with two tallies in the final twenty minutes makes sure Wings' 5 goals
aren't enough. Though the overtime didn't last long for afore mentioned
Baumgartner to bury the winner.
EBEL
is again full of surprises, March 11th is a new day for the teams trailing and
the others that tied the series to take advantage of the momentum twist.
