Craig Smith scored hat trick when USA defeated Finland 4-1 in Helsinki.
Finland took the lead when Jarno Koskiranta won the puck and scored with a backhand. The momentum of the game some what turned when Ryan Carter ran over Finland's goalie Antti Raanta. Carter sat six minutes at the bench for the hit and the following fight but it gave USA more energy and at 17:36 Craig Smith scored his first of three goals.
After exchancing chances in the second with 19 year old John Gibson coming up for USA to keep the score at 1-1 the US took the lead in the third period when Smith fired a one-timer from a pass from Statsny. Finland had some good chances for an equalizer but instead Stephen Gionta made it 3-1.
Smith scored his third goal to make the final score 4-1. An impressive game by the young Team USA who looks to be an outsider to compete for the medals.
