Denmark hopes to get the 2017 World Championship

Denmark hopes to get the 2017 World Championship

16 May 2012 | - DIU

In a year it will be decided who gets to arrange the 2017 IIHF World Championship. Denmark is one of the candidates and May 15-16 a Danish delegation visited Stockholm to observe this year’s championship.

"Denmark bids for the World Championship in ice hockey 2017", says the president of the Danish hockey federation (DIU) Henrik Bach Nielsen. "We are well underway with our bid campaign and we are here in Stockholm to be even wiser how to execute a World Championship".

If Denmark gets the championship it will be played in Copenhagen and Herning. Copenhagen Arena, scheduled to be ready in late 2015, will also be used for ice hockey. In the arena in Herning new cooling tubes are installed. These are the only arenas in Denmark that meet the World Championship’s minimum requirements for spectator capacity.

"A World Championship of hockey will be great and fantastic! We have previously in Denmark been hosts of the World Championship of road cycling and the start of Giro d'Italia, and we have secured the European Championship in handball for men in 2014. A World Championship in hockey would enroll in this list of the biggest sports events in Denmark, "says Lars Lundov, Director of Sport Event Denmark.

"In Copenhagen, we are right now in the project stage with the Copenhagen Arena, and therefore it is good to have the opportunity to visit a World Championship arena, where games are played 2-3 times daily, and where 8 teams and a lot of spectators and media people, etc. will be serviced over a period of 14 days. If we get a hockey World Championship in 2017, we are pleased that together with Herning invite the world to Denmark, "says Martin Bender, Event and Conference Director of Wonderful Copenhagen.

"Jyske Bank Box is already equipped for ice hockey. We have previously showed in Herning, that the size of the event is not a problem. But of course we can also learn from the experienced Swedish World Championship organizers, so we look forward to the tour in the World Championship arena and the planned meetings in Stockholm ", says Jørgen Krogh, Director of City of Industry and Culture in Herning.

In May 2013 it will be decided who gets the 2017 World Championship. Denmark’s main rivals are Germany / France that are looking for a joint hosting with Germany as the main host.

The 2013 World Championship will just like 2012 be played in Finland and Sweden but this time the semi finals and the final will be played in Stockholm.

Belarus will host the championship in 2014, Czech Republic in 2015 and Russia 2016.
