Five times Stanley Cup champion Esa Tikkanen will become the new coach of the Mestis club Jokipojat. During his active hockey career Tikkanen played 877 NHL games scoring 630 points.

 
 
 
 

27 Dec 2010, 16:22 | Sokil Kyiv bus vandalized in Grodno

Unknowns severely damaged the bus of Sokil Kyiv, parked at hotel in Grodno, before the game against local team for Belarus Open League. Because of this episode the team arrived late at the rink. The hotel administration offered to reimburse the cost of repairs. Sokil lost the game 4-1 and continue to be affected by economic troubles: \\\"We suffered irreparable human losses, and those who came in their place have skills to compete in championship of Ukraine, not at this level\\\", coach Aleksandr Seukand commented.

Canada won the important game against Russia (6-3) in the opening round of the WJC. The game was tied 3-3 after two periods but Canada secured the win with three unanswered goals in the third. Boxscore here

As expected Sweden won the Nordic derby against Norway. 7-1 was the final score, boxscore here.

A brilliant first period was enough for Switzerland to beat Germany in the WJC opener. The final score was 4-3 after the Swiss had a 4-0 lead after the first period. The annual Spengler Cup has started in Vaillant Arena in Davos, Switzerland. SKA St.Petersburg beat Geneve-Servette 3-1 in the opening game. The line with Aleksei Yashin (2+1), Maksim Sushinsky (0+3) and Tony Mårtensson (1+2) scored all three goals for the winners. Davos-Spartak Moskva ended 4-2. Reto Von Arx scored the first two Swiss goals and then added two assists.

Former NHLer Darius Kasparaitis left SKA St. Petersburg where he worked as assistant coach to assume the Lithuania bench as head coach for the upcoming IHWC Division I held in Kyiv, Ukraine next April. During the press conference the Lithuanian Federation president Petras Nauseda declared that Kasparaitis will work for free and that the new coach is talking with star Dainius Zubrus about a possible return to the national team if his team New Jersey Devils will fail to enter the playoffs.

The KHL game between SKA St. Petersburg and Spartak Moskva tonight was played in Vaillant Arena in Davos, Switzerland. Both teams will participate in Spengler Cup that starts on Sunday in the same arena and KHL thought that a game here would be a great way to promote the league in central Europe. SKA won the game 5-1 and Vitaly Vishnevsky scored two goals.

The two bonus rounds in the Finnish SM-Liiga to be played in late January have been decided. The worst team in the league, TPS, chose first and selected Ilves for the two extra games. Local Helsinki rivals HIFK and Jokerit will face each other. The rest of the match-ups: SaiPa-Tappara, Pelicans-KalPa, Kärpät-Blues, Lukko-Ässät and HPK-JYP.

Andrei Stepanov scored 4 goals today when his Yunost Minsk beat Mogilev 10-3 in the Belarusian league. Stepanov leads the league in scoring with 25 goals and 20 assists in 35 games. Yunost leads the league 10 points ahead of Neman Grodno.
