Game recap

Sheffield Steelers took both points in Guildford on Wednesday night, running out 5–1 winners against a short-benched Flames side.

“We were coming in knowing Guildford were short, but wanted to play a good game and wear them down with our depth, rolling four lines and trying to come out with the better hand,” said Steelers captain Robert Dowd. “Our special teams were very good. We were doing the right things and getting rewarded. In our own end we were brilliant — to only concede one goal against a very offensively skilled Guildford team was a good performance from us.”

The game began at a high tempo, with Dowd sent to the box for high-sticking less than a minute into play. Guildford had an early chance on the powerplay, but despite good zone time, Matt Greenfield kept the visitors level.

Stephen Harper opened the scoring late in the first period, reacting quickest in a goalmouth scramble to slide the puck past Justin Fazio and send the Steelers into the intermission ahead.

Cliff Pu doubled Sheffield’s lead 7:48 into the second period, redirecting Brian Diffley’s shot from the blue line past Fazio. A powerplay soon after saw Mitchell Heard make it 3-0 when the Flames failed to clear their zone.

With fatigue setting in for Guildford’s short bench, the Steelers continued to press. Dowd added a fourth with a long-range effort that hit the post and went in off Fazio’s back. Burman entered the net shortly after to finish the game for the Flames.

In the final period, Derek Gentile put five on the board for the Steelers, while Cole Ully scored a consolation for the Flames with just over six minutes to go.
