Game recap

Fife Flyers put an end to their losing stretch at 12 games with a hard-fought and well-earned home win against Guildford Flames.

An energetic start by the Flyers saw them rewarded with the game's opening goal inside 90 seconds - just 1:12 was on the clock when Matt Carter reacted quickest to a rebound from Jacob Benson's shot to bat the puck past Kevin Lindskoug. At the other end, Shane Owen made an excellent toe save to deny John Dunbar the equaliser in a period where the Flames outshot their hosts by almost three to one.

When Chris Gerrie levelled on the powerplay at 24:49 many home fans would have been forgiven for thinking the writing was on the wall for the basement side. However, the Flyers took control on the game with two goals inside five minutes. Jacob Benson tidied up a big rebound from Matt Carter's shot to make it 2-1, while at 30:02 Jonas Emmerdahl was free in the slot after a nice tic-tac-toe play to finish and put the Flyers two ahead.

Owen pulled off an incredible diving save to deny John Dunbar at the back post 5-on-3 with the period almost expired.

The Flames had a lot of pressure in period three without capitalising, Owen on hand when called upon to keep them at one. Eventually Ia Watters forced through his side's second of the night on the powerplay after Flyers' new signing Chris Lawrence was ejected for cross-checking. Jacob Benson found the empty net 30 seconds later, at 58:46, to seal an important win for Fife.
