On a dramatic final day of the 2018/19 Elite League regular season, Coventry Blaze produced a stunning performance to deny Cardiff the one point they needed to secure the league title – Belfast Giants were instead crowned champions!

The one thing Devils’ Head Coach Andrew Lord would not have wanted was to go behind early at the Skydome, but that’s what happened when Nicolai Bryhnisveen’s speculative shot went through everyone and into Ben Bowns’ net after only 3:49. The Devils gradually got back into the game, although it was the Blaze who had the better of the chances in the rest of the opening period – a slapshot hitting the side netting the closest the Devils came to an equaliser.

Things got far worse for the visitors 61 seconds into period two, as David Clements’ one timer found the back of the net to put the Blaze two up. Cardiff started to have more offensive zone time and eventually pulled themselves back into the game as Sam Duggan’s wrist shot beat Matt Hackett from the face-off spot to halve the deficit.

Period three saw the Devils with the majority of the possession, but they were unable to generate much other than from out the outside shooting positions. There was drama when Tom Floodqvist was awarded a penalty shot with under five minutes to go, although that hit the ironwork to stay out. Cardiff threw everything at the Blaze and Matt Hackett in particular, but their gamble with the empty net didn’t pay off – Ben Lake raced through to make it 3-1 and send the home fans wild – not to mention what probably happened for those watching in Belfast.

The Blaze’s win means they now face league champions Belfast in the playoffs, while the Devils will need to pick themselves up from this disappointment as they prepare to face Sheffield.
