Game recap

In the first of this weekend’s back-to-back clashes, Cardiff extended their lead at the top of the table to seven points with a hard-fought victory over Belfast.

It was the Giants who took the lead in the game, Colin Shields’ slapshot through a screen beating Bowns who would probably want it back with 9:01 gone. Cardiff were level at 16 minutes exactly, a deflected Charles Linglet pass reaching Mike Hedden for the back post tap in. The Devils then went ahead early in the middle period as matt Pope waited patiently behind the net before picking out Layne Ulmer in the slot who came up with the perfect finish. Just over 20 minutes later at the start of the third, the hosts moved further ahead through Gleason Fournier. Belfast pulled a goal back with 9:41 to go with Darcy Murphy coming in back post to score, but the game was settled with 63 seconds left as Sean Bentivoglio finished on the empty net after a great pass from Joey Martin.

That win keeps the Devils’ winning streak alive, while Belfast will need to make something happen tomorrow to avoid slipping further behind in the title hunt.
