Game recap

For the second night in a row a battling performance from Coventry Blaze in Belfast saw them leave empty-handed, as the Giants this time took a one-goal win.

The sides were scoreless after 20 minutes at the SSE Arena, but the hosts needed less than five minutes to take the lead in the middle period. On the powerplay, some nice passing eventually worked the puck to Patrick Dwyer to fire home unmarked at the far post with 25:47 gone.

Giving Dwyer too much space is never a good idea, and then on the 28-minute mark the Giants’ forward was allowed to walk from behind the net in front with the puck to beat Hackett for 2-0.

The Blaze were finding Stephen Murphy a tough task to beat, but did get themselves back in the game with 9:41 left to go in the game through a fortunate break – Luke Ferrera’s pass across the front of the crease deflecting in off Josh Roach. Alex Nikiforuk had one of the better chances to tie the game as he went through 1-on-0, but Murphy came up big to save his team and help them to win the game.

The result, combined with Cardiff losing in Sheffield, means that Belfast win the Erhardt Conference title, and go back top of the league.
