An extremely tight and end-to-end game at the Skydome saw Cardiff leave with an important two points in the title race. The game was scoreless for just over 50 minutes.

When the deadlock was broken it was at 50:01 in the game. Charles Linglet was fast down the left-wing, and threw the puck across the slot to Bryce Reddick – off of whom the puck deflected and past Hackett into the net. The goal was reviewed as it came off of Reddick’s skate, but stood after the referees had checked it over.

The Devils then doubled their lead 85 seconds later with another goal in the dirty areas – the puck put on net, poke checked by Hackett only to deflect off Stephen Dixon and then back off Hackett into the net.
