In a replay of last season's final, Metallurg beat champion Yunost to grab the Belarus Cup.
In front of 10,000 spectators at
Minsk Arena,
Metallurg Zhlobin won the
2011 Belarus Cup, beating reigning champion
Yunost Minsk 2-1 in overtime. A goal by
Andrei Spiridonov after 21 seconds of extra time gave the first ever trophy to the club created in 2006, who was beaten in last year's final. Slovak
Ivan Dornic opened the scoring at 22:17 for Metallurg, but Yunost equalized 3 minutes later,
Sergei Shleg at 25:01. The very last addition to the roster, Shleg arrived from Dinamo Minsk a week earlier.
Metallurg Zhlobin head coach Vasily Spiridonov said, "It was a balanced game. Both teams had opportunities to win. But we wanted to win more. I did not expect so many fans would be rooting for us. They were our sixth player. We will have the Cup in Zhlobin for the whole year!"
Said Yunost coach Aleksei Scheblanov: "It is always sad to be the losers. Simply, many players came unprepared for this match. What are the objectives for the season? The first was to keep the Cup in Minsk, but we failed. Tomorrow will be a new challenge. We have to be ready for this."
