EIHL roster update.
Several teams made substantial additions to rosters this week.
.
Braehead Clan were the first of the Scottish teams to
announce a new player this week as defenceman Cody Carlson, formerly of
Cincinatti Cyclones in the ECHL, joined them. He made seventy seven appearances
for the American side and has previously had spells in Germany
and France.
Coach Ryan Finnerty says he is excited to bring him in.
“Cody’s a player I know from back home and he’s a kid I like and
want to work with,” said Finnerty. “He has a lot of upside to his game
and can play in any position.
He’s someone I’ve been looking to add for a few years and every
coach we’ve spoken with has raved about him.
He was part of a really good Cincinnati team last year and we’re
expecting him to fill a utility role. Cody’s the guy you need someone to step
into a powerplay situation and he’s been there before.
People may look at his resumé and see the numbers, but knowing
him, he can play and be a good player for our team.
I think the Elite League will be a great place for him to come and
play and I believe he can be a very. very good player. Plus I know him
personally and I’m excited to get him.”
Great Britain U18
forward Ben Edmonds has signed a two-way contract with Dundee Stars and NIHL
North outfit Solway Sharks.
Edmonds put in a series
of impressive displays last season when called up to the Elite League and Head
Coach Marc LeFebvre hopes the youngster can build on that this term.
“He has a lot of
skill and a lot of drive – he has already got a good understanding of the
game,” said LeFebvre.
“We will look to
enhance these key components over the summer and next season and we are
comfortable that Ben can continue to progress.
“Ben is going to
train with us during the week and dress for Solway on the weekends. He will
play for us when Solway don’t have a game.
“If we have
injuries or suspensions he will be brought in, as we have first rights to call
him up.
“I’m very
comfortable with the link-up with Solway. They have a great coach down in Dumfries with Martin
Grubb. I’m very confident he will make a big contribution in Ben’s continued
development.
Jacob Johnston
will return to the Edinburgh Capitals line-up next season to complete the
second year of his two-year contract.
In addition to
icing for the Elite League club he will also continue his MBA studies at HeriotWattUniversity.
Johnston was one of the
highest scoring ‘D’ men last term, scoring 11 goals with 21 assists in 37 games
before injury cut his season short.
Now back to full
fitness Johnston is ready to make
a big impact as a key player in the Capitals’ rearguard.
However, Capitals
have agreed to suspend the contract of Paul Zanette until the result of his
doping inquiry is known
In Northern Ireland, Alex Foster
has joined the
club for the 2016/17 Elite League season.
Foster will link up with former teammate
Steve Saviano, with both icing
for HC Bolzano of the Austrian Hockey League during last season.
The American,
whose signing was made possible by the Giants’ partnership with the Ulster
University Business School, will be playing his sixth season in Europe
following spells with the Czech Republic’s Sparta Prague and three years in the
DEL split between Adler Mannheim and Iserhohn Roosters.
Steve Thornton,
Giants Head of Hockey Operations, said: “We wanted to be more fierce in terms
of competitiveness and add speed and I think he does both of those for us.
“Not too long ago
Alex was captain of the Toronto Marlies and put up 30/40 points in the DEL. He
is an incredible character, is still in his prime and can play multiple
positions.”
