Two long serving Sheffield Steelers greats hang up their skates at the end of the season.

Jason Hewitt, who has made over 680 appearances for Sheffield after joining from London eleven years ago could have played at least two more years but an opportunity came up for him outside of ice hockey which he could not refuse. Legue, a forward, holds the all time Steelers record for points in the major leagues (608).

Hewitt said “The club have been marvellous to me during my time and allowing me to have a testimonial is something I never thought would happen to me. I can’t thank them enough. For some reason I have a special relationship with the fans, I don’t know why the chose to love me as much as they seem to but I can’t thank them enough for the support they give me. They have been incredible from day one. They travel around the Country, around Europe and support us all. I think they know how much they and the club means to me, maybe that’s why they show me the support they do. I love them and their club, it’s been my life”.

Legue returns to his native Cornwall, Ontario after a stint of nine years which saw him begin with a championship trophy and end, at the moment with the league title. In between time he has lifted three more titles and the play off trophy two years ago.

Said Legue, when asked about his time in Sheffield, “I arrived here a boy I guess; now I leave a married man with a family. It’s time I went home though, the family in Canada is growing and I want to be a part of that. I want my family to grow as well too so we need to go and settle down.

“I will miss Sheffield and the Steelers every minute I’m away though. I could never have dreamed of the success, the great times, the incredible memories I have had, life changing. This club is a special club; it holds a special place in the City and the fans that support it as well. They are out of this world. They have treated me like a King and I will never, I can never forget them

“To go out as league champions is incredible. What a last year, I loved every minute. It would be nice to go out as double winners mind you and there isn’t any reason why we can’t do that”
