World Women‘s division II gets underway in France
06 Apr 2011 | Lukáš Peroutka
French city of Caen has ended its preparation for Division II of IIHF World Women’s championship and hockey fans can now look forward to a whole week of games involving Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Great Britain and Italy.
Unfortunately, the tournament has been hit with a late withdrawal of North Korea due to financial reasons. The tournament schedule has therefore shrunk to just two games each playing day.
Despite this distraction, the local community has embraced the championship and put considerable effort into its promotion. There are posters and navigation signs placed all around the town, with tournament flags proudly placed right next to the Saint-Etienne Abbey, Caen’s main tourist attraction.
The local stadium can hold ca. 1500 spectators and organizers still expect a capacity attendance for home team games.
The tournament started really well for Denmark, beating both Italy and Great Britain in the first two days. Czech Republic also overcame Great Britain while France beat Italy, so after two game days it looks like a three horse race for promotion with France, Czech Republic and Italy involved.
