The start of 2015/16 SHL season is closing in and for upcoming season, there will be 14 teams competing for the trophy Le Mat. Reigning champions are Växjö Lakers. For the next 14 days, Eurohockey is presenting one team each day. In Part 7. we meet HV71
Despite a turbulent summer in the organisation, HV71 have managed to recover well and leave the drama behind them. HV71 is an organisation who's been through a lot the last couple of years. But the club seems to find ways to get out of it and play a good hockey. One thing that HV71's fans yearn for, is the trophy. As the team have been eliminated from the quarterfinals in four straight seasons, there is a great hunger for revenge.
For upcoming season, HV71 did made a big change in both players and staff department. Former HV71 player, who also gave HV71 their first Le Mat trophy in 1995, Johan Lindbom became new head coach and by his side, assisting coach Tim Brithén (brother to HV71 captain Ted Brithén).
Players that have left HV71 are Gustaf Wesslau, Viktor Kokman, Jesper Williamsson, Sebastian Strandberg, Riley Holzapfel, Andreas Jämtin, Patrik Carlsson, Mattias Karlsson, Johan Johnsson, Andreas Johansson, David Petrasek, Calle Ridderwall.
Players that have been signed are Fredrik Pettersson-Wentzel, Simon Önerud, Oscar Sundh, Niklas Hansson, Chris Abbott, Martin Thörnberg, Ryan O´Byrne. In this years edition of HV71, we will three returning players and the question is, if they're going to have an impact on the team.
Martin Thörnberg is one of the most popular players: -"I've been waiting a long time to get the HV71 jersey back on," he said in an interview earlier. The same goes for Simon Önerud and Oscar sundh. Two players that certainly will produce this season.
HV71's opening game is against Skellefteå AIK on September 17th in Skellefteå Kraft Arena, Skellefteå, Sweden.
