The DEL champion will get a chance to defend its title this year as Ingolstadt kicked out Düsseldorf with 4-1 in the series yesterday. But the opponent will be no other than the dominating team of the regular season.
With an impressive 6-2 win in game 5 Ingolstadt closed the series against Düsseldorfer EG yesterday. They did not leave the Rhine city any chance as they dominated from the beginning of the game. John Laliberte got Ingolstadt in the lead in the first period while Patrick Hager and Jean-Francois Boucher added to a 3-0 lead early in the second. Thomas Dolak’s first marker for Düsseldorf was then again answered by the first powerplay goal of the night through Thomas Greilinger.
Patrick Hager’s second goal of the night, coming on the penalty kill, finally broke Düsseldorf’s believe they could still turn this around. Christoph Gawlik and Ken-Andre Olimb shared one more goal each and so Ingolstadt will now have one last hurdle to jump over in their quest to defend their championship. Adler Mannheim qualified with a 4-0 sweep over the Wolfsburg Grizzly Adams and wrote a bit of DEL history since they came back 3 times from 0-3 deficits.
