It's been quite a while since Switzerland won a championship or olympic game against Finland. You'll have to go back to Calgary, Olympic Games 1988 where Switzerland won 2:1. Since then, Finland left the games as winner.

Tommi Kivisto's shot from the blue line in the 6th minute was impossible to block for Goalie Reto Berra and so the Finns had the early lead in a period that didn't see any other goals. With the start of the second period Switzerland got stronger but once again it was Finlands forwards who got the better end with Oli Jokinen scoring the second goal after 32 minutes of play. If Switzerland wanted to keep their slim chances of advancing to the quarterfinals they needed fo start scoring and that's exactly what they did. Two minutes into the last period Reto Suri got the puck past Pekka Rinne with a hard slapshot from the left side. Switzerland now had the upper hand but couldn't capitalise on the chances they created until it was Roman Josi, normally team mate of Rinne who circled around the defense and scored the game tying goal with 3 minutes left in regulation.

No further goals meant a five minute overtime where both teams had 2 shots on goal each but neither could score the game winner. The shootout was the time for both goalies to shine. No goal was scored during the first 5 rounds but when Iiro Pakarinen took his second attempt he got Reto Berra between his legs and secured 2 points for the Finns while Switzerland takes the one point. Finland now takes the 3rd spot while Switzerland is rests on the 7th place and will face Kazakhstan tomorrow in a game that's important for both teams.

In addition, the Swiss are still waiting for their first win against the Finns.
