The first AHL All Star game against a European opponent went well especially on the ice in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
The AHL All Stars rode the fine play of Brandon Pirri (Rockford) with two goals and assist for MVP honors, Mike Hoffman, Jason Jaffray and Ryan Strome in a 7-2 win.
Mike Hoffman (Binghamton) got things started scoring the games first goal on a setup from Joe Whitney (Albany). The games second goal game from Ryan Strome (Bridgeport) from a nice feed from Brian Gibbons (Wilkes Barre) got past Frederik Petterson-Wentzel.
Jason Jaffray, the team captain and from the host St. John’s Ice Caps found Ben Street (Abbotsford) at 12:00 mark. Then defenseman Cody Golobeuf (Springfield) shot from the right point was deflected by AHL regular season points leader Travis Morin (Texas) for the AHL All Stars and 4-0 AHL All Stars lead.
The second period saw just one goal as Pirri sent in all alone by Hoffman scored on a breakaway and pushing the lead to 5-0.
Färjestad BK broke their scoreless status as Magnus Nygren right point shot 25 seconds in the third period on a pass from 16 year old Oliver Kylington.
Then 2:55 later Pirri on the left wing converted a smart Hoffman pass and put it past Pekka Tuokkola. Färjestad BK’s Rickard Wallin found the back of the net again for the kelly green clad squad.
The AHL All Stars closed out the games scoring as Strome tallied his second of the game courtesy a turnover and pass from Gibbons moved in about 15 feet out and snapped it past Tuokkola.
