Sweden wins against Switzerland at the World Juniors

Switzerland is always a hard opponent for Sweden. So also today. But in the end Sweden was stronger and opened the home championship with a 5-3 win.

As usual Switzerland gave Sweden a hard game. They were in the lead twice in the opening period but the Swedes were quick to reply on both occasions. Switzerland also managed to tie the game in the third period and many Swedes remembered the game between the two teams in Ufa last year when Sweden needed game winning shots to win the game.

However, Sweden managed to tie the knot this time. Christian Djoos scored 4-3 and Andreas Johnson 5-3.

"We didn't play at our best", Djoos said to Eurohockey.com. "But this is not the game where we are supposed to be at our best".

The Swiss team got an early power power play and put some pressure on Sweden with no luck. But only seconds after the Swedes were back at full strength they got a new penalty and this time the Swiss team showed efficiency. Sandro Zangger picked up a rebound to open the scoring.

Sweden's Filip Forsberg showed that he is a super star at this level. With some nifty moves he forced the Swiss team to take a penalty. During the delayed call he took a hard one-timer from the blue-line to tie the game.

Sweden started to dominate and all of a sudden they played like they already won the gold medals, totally forgetting the defence. Sloppy Swedes let young (born 1996) speedster Kevin Fiala come all alone with Oscar Dansk in the net to make it 2-1 Switzerland.

Once again Sweden replied quickly. Lukas Bengtsson tied the game at two after a Swiss defender had given the puck to Erik Karlsson.

"We need they were good" said Fiala after the game. "They had beaten USA and Canada just before the tournament to we know this would be a hard game".

At 17:19 Sweden took the lead for the first time when Oskar Sundqvist picked up his own rebound after a great pass from Forsberg on the other side of the net.

The second period remained scoreless. The Swedes had a couple of good opportunities to increase the lead. André Burakowsky missed a breakaway and Alexander Wennberg had a shot off the post. Flavio Schmutz had the best Swiss chance when he failed to beat Dansk from close range in the fourteenth minute.

The Swiss team got an early power play in the third period and they didn't need much time to tie the game. Sandro Zangger hit the post and Fabrice Herzog picked up the puck after a couple of rebounds to score.

Sweden got a powerplay and once again answered the Swiss goal quickly. Christian Djoos faked a shot and then scored with a high shot from the blue-line.

At half the third period the 11,109 crowd in the arena started the wave.

"It was really fun to play in front of all those people", said Djoos. "I hope they will return".

Sweden secured the win with Andreas Johnson's 5-3 goal three minutes before the end. He has assisted by Frölunda team-mate Alexander Wennberg.

Dario Simion had a great chance to take Switzerland closer again at 58:22 but Dansk got the catcher on the puck. After that Switzerland pulled their goalie Melvin Nyffeler in a last attempt to catch up with the Swedes.
