Another thriller in Salzburg and this time the Austrians came out lucky and sent Medvescak on an early vacation. Also, Villach and Linz will play game 7 after all.
Salzburg started strong towards Medvescak's goalie Michael Ouzas, in the third minute DiBenedetto fires one up, but Medvescak's goalie is ready for it. Five minutes after Gal Koren caught Salzburg sleeping and went one-on-one with Luka Gracnar in net for Salzburg, but couldn't lift the puck enough to score. Some penalties were drawn then on both sides but it remained scoreless until the end of the period.
In the second period, a very odd goal was scored on Salzburg's side. Namely, Kyle Greentree was serving in the box, puck came bouncing off the boards to Ouzas who found himself with the puck in the net. After reviewing the replay, the goal was confirmed. The scorer - Ryan Duncan. Two minutes later, Salzburg already doubled the lead. Captain Alan Letang made a mistake, Daniel Richmond took the puck and tricked Ouzas with the shot that should have been saved, although there was a lot of traffic in front. Penalties continued to thread, while Gracnar remained an enigma. But, then came 38th minute and a deflected shot by Gracnar that was picked up by David Brine and put in the back of the net to decrease the lead. At the very end of the period Sasa Martinovic was brutally attacked by Salzburg's Robert Davison and was taken to hospital to do CT and undertake other measures if needed. Strangely enough, Davison got only a minor (!) two-minute penalty. That was the end of the second period and we were headed into the second intermission.
Minutes had been passing in a very evenly matched game, until ten minutes prior to the end Brandon Buck scores between Gracnar's legs for a huge tie in this game. Although it was expected to calm a bit down and play more cautious and wary, both teams continued to attack constantly, however the result didn't change until the end and it was time for overtime, the third time in this series.
The game continued in a fast-paced rythm. Medvescak started exceptionally, but couldn't capitalize on their opportunities, so there came the punishment. Ryan Duncan took the puck and shot it just under the bar for an explosion of entrancement in the Eisarena Salzburg. That's the end of the season for Medvescak and the semifinal series for Salzburg, again the Vienna Capitals.
"I got to thank my guys, they gave everything they could, I can't blame them for anything. In the end we played with only three D-men so it was pretty tough. And I'd like to thank the best fans in the world for giving us this great support, it wouldn't be the same without them. Thank you all once again, and see you in September!", coach Marty Raymond of Medvescak was honest after the game.
Villach survives for game 7
Villach demounted the current champions and made it to game 7 of the quartefinal series. In Villach a total of 7 goals were scored, 6 of which were on the home team side and they showed that they could proceed to the semifinal series against, now it's known and Salzburg has already proceeded, KAC. In the second minute Andreas Wiedergut opened the scoring, and Markus Peintner increased the lead until the end of the first, and scored for 3:0 in the 26th.
40 seconds later Daniel Oberkofler puts the puck behind Jean Philippe Lamoreaux, but in the 30th minute Villach continues to dominate the game and Scott Hotham got onto the board with a goal for 4:1.
