Sweden tops U20 Four Nations Tournament
14 Nov 2010 | Lukáš Peroutka
Sweden U20 national team comprehensively won the Four Nations Tournament held in Czech Republic, winning all three games in the process. The competition provided coaches one of the last chances to evaluate their players before making final selections for the upcoming World Junior Championship held in Buffalo.
Young Swedes conceded just four goals in three games and were able to build on their solid defence to achieve victory. The only moment when they were trailing in any game came on the opening day of the tournament, when Finland took a second period lead, but it lasted just five minutes. Tre Kronor went on to win the game late in the third period, confirming their fine form a day later with a clear victory against careless Russia and sealing the top spot after a matured performance in a game with Czech Republic.
Other nations shared the remaining points. Czechs beat Russia thanks to a hat-trick of 17-year old Russian born forward Dmitriy Yashkin, but found the net just twice in their other two games against Scandinavian opponents. Finland provided a tough test for Sweden, outplayed Czech Republic, but put in a disappointing performance on the final day against the Russian team, that was missing some of their best young players.
