Regular season winners Eisbären Berlin opened the best-of-seven series against Cologne with a clear home win

Eisbären Berlin - Kölner Haie 5:1

Already the first period could have been a complete horror show for the guests from Cologne but despite being outshot 29 to 2 (!) they only allowed one goal by Barry Tallackson who brought Berlin in front in power play in the 17th minute. All other shots were saved by a great Danny aus den Birken. The second period was similar although the shoting numbers were a bit more comfortable for the guests than in the first 20 minutes. Around "half time" André Rankel extended the lead for the Polar Bears but not even a minute later his former team mate Alexander Weiß did get Cologne to the scoreboard. With less than two minutes to go in the period James Sharrow did get the two-goal lead back to the team from the German capital. In the last period the game was more equal than in the previous two periods but Cologne couldn't use this two score another time. Instead Richard Regehr and again André Rankel - this time in power play - made it 5-1. Despite letting through five shots guest goalie aus den Birken was the best player of his team by making 47 saves.

Berlin leads 1-0 in the series
