Game recap

Manchester Storm continued their strong start to the season with a convincing 5-1 home victory over Fife Flyers on Halloween night, keeping their momentum rolling near the top of the Elite League standings.

The Flyers, still searching for their first league win, came out hard in the opening period and gave the Storm an early scare by hemming them in their own zone for extended spells. Despite the pressure, it was the home side who struck first - Brady Gilmour pounced on a turnover and broke away, pulling off a slick move to fake Shane Owen to the backhand before cutting forehand to slide the puck home with 15:12 left in the period.

Fife’s powerplay unit hit back quickly after JD Dudek was called for high-sticking, with Garet Hunt firing a pinpoint shot from the faceoff dot that beat Drew DeRidder cleanly to tie the game.

Manchester regained the lead before the intermission when Stephen Johnson converted a loose puck in front of Owen with just four minutes remaining.

The second period was dominated by rhe Storm, as the home side piled on the pressure with a flurry of chances. Owen was at his acrobatic best to keep Fife in the game, producing a remarkable stretching pad save on a 2-on-0 chance and flashing the glove to deny another cross-ice effort. But despite the Flyers’ netminder’s heroics, the visitors couldn’t find any offensive rhythm of their own, trailing 2-1 through 40 minutes.

The Storm put the game to bed early in the third. Gilmour grabbed his second of the night just 71 seconds in, before quick goals from Dennis Busby and Brendon Clavelle inside three minutes stretched the lead to 5-1 and sealed the win.

“It’s good to get five quick early wins and hopefully we’ll go from there,” said Storm forward Gary Haden. “Our goal is to make the playoffs - that’s why we’re all here. Manchester didn’t make it last year, so that’s a big focus for us. Points early in the season are huge because they can slip away later.”

Haden also credited his linemates for the team’s success. “I can’t take all the credit - our line’s been so good recently. Brady Gilmour, Stephen Johnson - it’s really easy to play with those guys. We just try to outwork other teams and hopefully keep the success rolling.”

For Fife, frustration was clear after another difficult night. “It’s been repetitive mistakes that are killing us,” admitted Flyers defenseman Ryan Nicholson. “We’re acknowledging it, but when are we actually going to learn and do it? That seems to be our Achilles heel at the moment.”

Nicholson was full of praise for his goaltender, though. “Shane’s doing everything for us. It’s crucial, but we’re not doing enough work in front of him. That’s on all of us - every guy skating in front needs to be better, period.”
