Game recap

Not perhaps the start that new Coventry Blaze netminder Matt Hackett would have wanted for the Coventry Blaze, but a happy ending for his side who came out on top by the odd goal in fifteen after overtime in Surrey.

In just under four first period minutes the Flames raced into a 4-0 lead over the Blaze, a combination of Kruise Reddick, Ian Watters and two from Brett Ferguson putting the Flames into a healthy lead and spelling an early night for Hackett in net who was pulled. The Blaze rallied though and had two goal back before the period was over thanks to Alex Nikiforuk and Tim Crowder to pull it back to 4-2 by 14:31.

A little over a minute into the second Coventry were back to within one as Shawn Pauly converted, but the Flames needed under two to go back ahead y a pair thanks to Calle Ackered. However goals from Chris Joyaux and another from Nikiforuk made it a tied game by 25:08.  The Blaze took the lead for the first time in the game with Ben Lake’s goal at 28:46, and then went two ahead just after halfway through the game thanks to Thom Flodqvist. Just over 4:30 later Ackered pulled the Flames back to within one, and the game went into the break at 7-6 to the visitors.

With 49:45 played Kevin King brought the Flames level, and with no more goals both sides took a point as the game headed to overtime. Nikiforuk finished with a hat-trick as he hit the game winner 1:16 into the extra session.
