Ted Nolan is Latvia’s new coach

The Latvian Ice Hockey Federation has hired former Buffalo Sabres and New York Islanders coach as the new head coach for the Latvian national team. Nolan replaces Oleg Znaroks at the position.

 
 
 
 
After a 13th place at last years World Championship Oleg Znaroks' contract as head coach for Latvia was not extended. The replacer will be 53 year old Canadian Ted Nolan.

During the last two seasons Nolan has been vice president of hockey operations for the Rochester Americans in the AHL. Earlier he has coached both Buffalo Sabres and New York Islanders in the NHL. 1997 he was awared with the Jack Adams award as the NHL Coach of the year.

Since the indepence in 1991 Latvia has never had a North American coach before but this time they decided to go with a Canadian, Mike Keenan was another candidate for the job. Nolan will soon arrive in Riga to start his work and he is also expected to help with U20 team.

The Latvian federation also announced that it will work more closely with the KHL team Dinamo Riga were many of the national team player play. This in a effort to improve the national team again after the poor result in last year's WC.
