Since the indepence in 1991 Latvia has never had a North American coach before but this time they decided to go with a Canadian, Mike Keenan was another candidate for the job. Nolan will soon arrive in Riga to start his work and he is also expected to help with U20 team.

The Latvian federation also announced that it will work more closely with the KHL team Dinamo Riga were many of the national team player play. This in a effort to improve the national team again after the poor result in last year's WC.
