After what has to be one of the biggest sensations ever at the World Championships Denmark are through to semi final after beating Canada 2-1 on home ice in Herning.
After a tough start to the tournament Denmark came back and won the four last games of the preliminary round to clinch the last quarter final spot. As one of the hosts Denmark would play the quarter final at home in Herning while Canada, despite winning group A, had to travel from Sweden to Denmark for the quarter final.
Canada who came to the championship with a strong team lead by super stars like Sidney Crosby and Nathan Mackinnon came to Herning as huge favourites. But the Danes did a great performance and held 0-0 after two periods. But five minutes into the third period Travis Sanheim got a puck past Frederik Dichow who made 39 saves in the game. But after the goal Denmark came out strong chasing the equalizer and outshot Canada 22-10 in the third period. And with 2:17 left of the game the home fans could celebrate as Nikolaj Ehlers scored with an extra attacker on the ice.
But the celebrations would reach another level as the 10,500 sold out arena saw Nick Olesen being left alone in front of the Canadian goal and scoring the game winning goal from close range with only 49 seconds left to play. Canada made an effort to tie the game but heroic Danes managed to defend and the sensation and biggest success ever of Danish hockey was a fact.
Denmark will now play Switzerland in the semi finals. Switzerland who defeated Austria 6-0 in the quarter finals. Sweden will play USA in the other semi final as they both won their quarter finals 5-2. USA against Finland and Sweden against Czechia. Both semi finals are played in Stockholm, Sweden.
