The Belfast Giants, host for the Superfinals of the Continental Cup opened their account with a 5-0 shutout of HC Gomel of Belarus.
Belfast Giants’ Head Coach Adam Keefe couldn’t have asked for a better start to his side’s Continental Cup Final weekend, as the hosts blanked Belarus’ HC Gomel 5-0 at the SSE Arena.
Gomel rarely threatened as their defensive style played into the hands of the hosts. It did however take Belfast almost 18 minutes to take the lead, David Rutherford’s deflection on Curtis Leonard’s shot breaking the deadlock with 2:06 left in the opening period. Patrick Dwyer made it 2-0 just 1:58 in the middle period to put the Giants in control, but it was the third where Keefe’s men saw their dominance show.
Darcy Murphy’s clever play to score off the back of Gomel netminder Roman Bobariko made it three just over four minutes into the final period, and with a little under ten minutes to go Colin Shields took the lead out to four. Returnee Chris Higgins rounded off the scoring at 57:41 to complete a good opening match for the Giants who face Polish side GKS Katowice tomorrow.
