Kölner Haie with almost perfect derby weekend

The teams who chase Cologne had to give up points today
Two days after a great race to catch up in the "small" Rhine derby in Krefeld, league leaders Kölner Haie beat their archrivals Düsseldorfer EG with 4-0 at home in front of 16,378 spectators. The young Düsseldorf side came out of the cabins with a lot of pressure but after a face off Andreas Holmqvist brought the hosts in front already at 02:08 and just five minutes later Alexander Weiß used the first power play of the game to make it 2-0. In the following period Cologne missed to get another one and so the match stayed open. Still at 55:07 Rok Ticar managed to get the decision and with 2:12 left in regulation John Tripp found the empty net for the 4-0. Haie goalie Danny aus den Birken had a 21-save shutout and had several good blocks. Cologne now has won 13 out of 15 matches.
At the moment the Augsburger Panther are not in their best momentum. The otherwise strong side in home matches lost at thome against the Iserlohn Roosters. After the first period it was 2-2 before Colin Stuart and Mark Bell with his second of the day pathed the way for the Roosters win in the middle period. Early in the third Mark Ardelan even scored the 2-5. For Augsburg which had an impressive start into the DEL season it was already their 5th loss in 7 games while Iserlohn had their 3rd win in 4 matches - with a 1-7 in Berlin in between.
Another top team struggling this weekend is ERC Ingolstadt which lost in Hannover against the local Scorpions despite a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes. Eric Regan, Gerrit Fauser and Morten Green won the match for Hannover in the third period though. Now Hannover is just two points behind the top-6 spots.
A solid 3-0 away win in the Bavarian derby against Red Bull München let the Straubing Tigers conquer the sixth place in the DEL table which guarantees a direct qualification for the playoff quarterfinals. Grant Lewis, Daniel Sparre and René Röthke were the goal scorers for the guests while München was disappointing for a home team with only 20 shots on goal and not being able to steal a shutout from Straubing goalie Jason Bacashihua.
A stellar performance by Bandon Reid (two goals, one assist) and lockout forward Jamie Benn (two goals) lets the Hamburg Freezers take all three points in the Northern duel away against the bottom side Grizzly Adams Wofsburg. Hamburg had a five-point weekend and thus came much closer to the top group of the league.
Two days after their derby loss at home against Cologne, the Penguins from Krefeld had a comeback themselves today in Nürnberg. Top star Christian Ehrhoff and Andreas Driendl let Krefeld have a 3-3 tie after the regular time. In the shootout only Steve Hanusch could transform his penalty shot attempt and won the extra point for Krefeld.
