Germany and France officialized joint application to host 2017 IHWC at IIHF General Assembly in Tokyo
After the General Assembly of the International Federation Ice Hockey (IIHF) currently taking place in Tokyo voted unanimously the possibility for more then a country to co-organize World Championship - follows the positive assessment of the organization of the Championship World 2012 competition which was jointly held in Finland and Sweden - the German Federation and the French Federation of Ice Hockey formalized their joint bid to organize the World Championship 2017.
The application benefits from the new tournament format: the new llHF tournament format offers ideal conditions to stage the championship in two
countries. As in 2012, the 16 participating nations are divided in two groups of eight teams each (so far: 4 x 4). The unpredictable qualification round, as well as the unattractive relegation games are not being played any more. It is planed that besides the preliminary round (28 games each), the quarter-finals will be split to both countries. Both semi-finals, as well as the bronze-medal and the gold-medal games will take place in Germany. As a consequence, 34 out of the 64 games will be played in Germany and 30 games in France. lt is already decided that the well-known Palais Omnisport will be the venue in Paris. The arena, which already today fulfills all world championship standards, will further be upgraded and its capacity will be extended to 15,000 spectators by 2015. In Germany, cities like Berlin or Cologne with their state-of-the-art arenas and outstanding infrastructure are considered as tournament venues. The evaluation period will be finished by November 2012. The World Championship Organizing Committee works very closely together with the long time llHF partner Infront Sports & Media during the application process and also in case of being granted the hosting right.
With two home teams, a highly attractive tournament will be established for teams and spectators in both countries as well as for the worldwide hockey family. Franz Reindl, General Secretary of the German lce Hockey Federation, will be responsible for the joint application as well as for the promotion and organization of the tournament together with President Uwe Harnos.
"France itself could never manage to host a world championship on its own, but with Germany as a partner we have a great opportunity and a good chance." says
LucTardif, President of the French Hockey Federation (FFHG) and gives credit to the DEB. The development of ice hockey will be beneficial for both countries and entire Central Europe. In addition to that, the lce Hockey World Championship will be opened and exposed
to a bigger market.
Besides the two national flags, the official logo of the application also shows a stylized goaltender, who wears jersey number 80. With this, the former national team player Robert Muller will commemorated, whose 8th anniversary of death will be in May 2017.
