Kölner Haie defend first place in DEL. In the first version of the Rhine derby against Düsseldorf the Sharks won in overtime - Salzburg stopped in catch to race up. While Dornbirn more and more adjusts to the higher level of EBEL, Innsbruck continues to look pretty chanceless
DELThe derbies between Kölner Haie and DEG Metro Stars are always one of the highlights of each DEL season. Today more than 15,000 people came to Lanxess Arena to see the top game of the day that was also shown live in internet tv channel Laola1 TV. Alexander Henry had opened the score for the guests who were supported by a few hundreds of their own fans who tanks to a special event could use part of the supporters zone of the home fans to be closer to the ice at 13:08. Cologne stays the only unbeaten team in the whole DEL and managed to get 13 out of 15 possible points in their first five games.
First chaser stay the Eagles from Mannheim who gave Nürnberg their first defeat of the season. 19 year old Leonhard Pföderl, in his first year in professional ice hockey, scored the 0-1 for the Ice Tigers but Mannheim turned the game around to make it a comfortable 3-1 lead. Yan Stastny only could cut the lead to one with 11 seconds left in regulation.
Augsburger Panther couldn't keep up with the first two teams due to a last-minute loss against Krefeld Pinguine. At the begin of the second period Peter Flache had opened the score in favor of Augsburg. This goal seemed to be the decision already but with 11 seconds left on the clock and an additional attacker on the ice for Krefeld, the Penguins tied the match through Boris Blank. In the shootout Krefeld even won the extra point. For Augsburg it was the first loss of the season in match number four.
In another duel of two competitors for one of the higher spots in the regular season, Ingolstadt beat Hamburg Freezers 5-2. Hamburg tied a two-goal deficit until the middle of the second period but three consecutive goals for Ingolstadt were decisive in the home win. Both teams now have 9 points in five matches.
The Straubing Tigers underlined their home strength with a 4-2 win against the Iserlohn Roosters. With this win Straubing is now among the top six of the league with 9 points. Iserlohn is only 12th with 3 points.
It was a must-win game for Berlin and the Polar Bears fulfilled their task. Against Red Bull München they won were in front 1-0 and 3-1 before Ryan Kavanagh brought tension back into the last minutes of play. In the end the secon win of the season for Berlin was clear.
In a low-scoring Lower Saxony derby Hannover Scorpions lost at home against the Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg. At the end of the second period Aaron Brocklehurst had opened the score for Wolfsburg in a 5-on-3 power play before Martin Hlinka tied the match at 53:42 - also with the two men advantage. Just half a minute later and in the same power play situation, Wolfsburg won the game with a short hander by Kai Hospelt. For Wolfsburg it was the first win of the season. Hannover has the lowest amount of games played (2) and is the only team without gaining a single point yet.
EBELEBEL leaders EC VSV had their third consecutive home win in 7 days by beating Czech side Orli Znojmo 6-2. The home side was in front 4-1 after the first period. When Jarusek's shorthander found the back of the net in the 24th minute, the reaction by Villach came immediately through a goal by Derek Ryan in the very same power play situation. Man of the match was VSV player Marco Pewal who scored a hat trick.
Second in the table are the Vienna Capital who won 5-2 in Graz against the local 99ers. After 40 minutes it was a 2-2 before the Capitals decided the match in their favour through Tony Romano - with his second of the night - Andre Lakos and Jonathan Ferland. With 12 points Vienna stays one point behind Villach.
EC KAC from Klagenfurt received their favourite rivals on Friday. Against Hungarian side SAPA Fehervar AV19 they were still unbeaten in home matches. The series was extended to incredible 15 games by a solid 3-1 win. Tyler Spurgeon twice in power play and Jamie Lundmark had pathed the way for their team's success and last year's regular season top scorer for the Hungarians, Istvan Sofron, only managed to get the consolidation goal in the 54th minute.
Salzburg had a complete blackout in the first half our of their match in Linz. The EC Red Bull lay behind 0-5 after just 27 minutes. When really no one believed in a comeback anymore, the guests scored four consecutive goals to cut the lead to just one even before the second intermission. In the 52nd minute Mike Ouelette decided everything for the hosts with his second strike of the night. For Salzburg it was the second away loss in a row. On the other side it was only the third win of the season for current champions Black Wings Linz.
KHL Medvescak Zagreb from Croatia had quite a few problems so far but against the weakest team of the league, newcomers HC Innsbruck, they had an easy task. Zagreb was already leading 5-0 in their away game before they allowed Innsbruck to score twice through Höller and Lemieux in the last minutes of play.
Better the season started for co-newcomers EC Dornbirn. The club won a close game against HDD Olimpija Ljublajna from Slovenia with 5-4. The match was an up and down for both sides but in the end Michael Henrich scored the game winner for Dornbirn in the 55th in power play. For Dornbirn it was their third win in the first seven games of the season - while Innsbruck only has just one point on their account.
