Nottingham Panthers completed a weekend double over Dundee Stars to move top of the Elite League table, taking their points total to nine from five games with a 5-3 win on Sunday afternoon.
“It was great today, for the most part we did our job and got it done,” said Panthers forward Ross Armour. “We knew Dundee would have some pushback coming into our building, but we knew what we needed to do to be successful.”
Matt Spencer opened the scoring midway through the first period to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead at the first intermission.
“We’re not happy to lose another one,” said Stars captain Drydn Dow. “There were spurts where we played well and parts where we kinda shut off, and that’s where they took advantage. We have to clean that up and come back better.”
A strong second period put Nottingham firmly in control. Hampus Olsson levelled for Dundee just 70 seconds after the restart, but Armour restored the Panthers’ lead less than two minutes later. Nolan Volcan extended the advantage, and Armour struck again soon after to give Nottingham three goals in around five minutes and make it 4-1 heading into the final 20 minutes.
“The guys around me did great to set me up for those two goals,” added Armour. “The fans here are awesome, we love it. It’s hard not to get up for a game when you have so many people out there cheering for you.”
Bryan Lemos added a fifth for Nottingham at 49:11, seemingly putting the game out of reach. However, the Stars fought back late on with goals from Bradley Schoonbaert and Spencer Naas, closing the gap to two but leaving themselves too much to do as the Panthers held on for the win.
“We thought we played well in the third period and showed some fight back towards the end of the game,” added Dow. “We feel like we have a good team in our room, it’s just the mental lapses where we take five minutes off, and you can’t do that.”
