Goals and assists
Tom Barrasso’s Sheffield Steelers gently nudged themselves further into the top six and extended their lead from falling out of the playoffs to five points thanks seeing off a late Blaze fight back.
A shot wide from Jonathan Phillips eventually led to the opening goal in the game – Evan McGrath tried the wrap-around with Matt Hackett out of position, and Anthony DeLuca eventually poked the puck over the line from close range to give the Steelers the lead at 14:41. John Armstrong on the breakaway with a lovely move around Hackett led to the hosts going two ahead shorthanded early in the second period, but the Blaze were to cut the deficit in half at 26:52 – Nicolai Bryhnisveen given far too much time and space to shoot past Jackson Whistle into the net.
DeLuca grabbed his second of the game at 31:16 as his slapshot crept through Hackett’s five-hole and rolled into the net, and by 46:35 Josh McFadden put the Steelers into a 4-1 lead. But the Blaze weren’t out of it yet, and duly started a fight back – Ben Lake got them stated when he was left unattended at the back post to tap in at 49:27, and with 2:07 to play in the game Kevin Morris brought the score back to 4-3. The Steelers held on though for a win to avenge last week’s shootout loss in Coventry.
