Game recap

Cardiff stayed top of the league with a big win over Sheffield, a night after the Steelers had beaten then leaders Belfast.

After a good opening spell from both teams, the Devils eventually made one of their better scoring opportunities count as Matthew Myers perceived to bring the puck in front of the net and scored with a swinging backhand shot at 13:55.

While Sheffield competed well in the opening period, the middle session belonged to the Devils entirely as they moved into a big lead. Layne Ulmer got the ball rolling, eventually helping the puck over the line from close range after a Charles Linglet fake shot caused some confusion 1:39 into the period. At 25:30 a fantastic pass from Mike Hedden found Sean Bentivoglio in space in the Steelers’ zone, and he patiently waited to deke Jackson Whistle and slot home into a gaping net. Hedden and then Evan Mosey added goals at 31:33 and 33:00 respectively to put the Devils five ahead after 40 minutes.

With the game effectively won, the third period was a quieter one with just the single goal Matthew Myers was credited with it, after the puck took a wicked deflection off Brandon Whistle to beat brother Jackson in net.

The win was the Devils’ second shutout of the weekend, and keeps them a win clear at the top of the table.
