Avangard Omsk made it after all

Regular season winner Avangard Omsk was the last team to qualify for the KHL Quarter Finals. Today Nefteknimik Nizhnekamsk was defeated 7-3 in the seventh game.

Avangard was in big trouble after five games being down 3-2 in the 1/8 series and needing wins in the two remaining games. It was successful after all. Game 6 was won 3-2 away and today Avangard won 7-3 at home.
Roman Cervenka opened the scoring for the hosts at 5:18 with his first goal of the playoffs. Andrei Ivanov tied it for Neftekhimik 3 minutes later. Alexei Kalyuzhny and Anton Belov took Omsk to a 3-1 lead and Libor Pivko added another away goal before the first period had ended.
Avangard won the second period 2-0 on goals by Alexander Perezhogin and Roman Cervenka. The home team scored another two goals in the third period by Alexander Perezhogin and Alexander Popov. Neftekhimik got a third goal when Igor Polygalov scored on a penalty shot two minutes before the end.
Omsk will play Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the Quarter Finals. All favourites except for Dynamo Moskva who lost to Dinamo Riga made it past the 1/8 Finals.
