President´s trophy winner: HC Oceláři TřinecTřinec proved a great form during all regular season. When we won´t count first few rounds, when all the teams were furiously changing the top of the league standings, Třinec didn´t leave the Top 3 spots at all. As the only team Oceláři demonstrated a balanced performance for all the long-term part of the season and they grabbed the first place and the President´s trophy deservedly.
The biggest surprise of the season: HC Vítkovice SteelWhy are Vítkovice marked as this season biggest surprise? As they finished second in the last year´s playoffs after losing the finals to Pardubice... It´s really easy to answer this question: After the last very successful season a big players´ sellout occurred and a big part of the main team´s bulwarks left the Vítkovice roster. Yes, a sniper Rudolf Huna came, but it was the only big name that empowered Vítkovice. Also the GM and coach in one person Alois Hadamczik left the team and took a second shot to lead the Czech national team. But still, this equip is presenting great play, Vítkovice players picked out just one weak period, they reached the 3rd spot and before the playoffs they are strong again.
The worst regret of the season: HC Sparta PragueSparta Prague is one of big favorites for the Czech Extraliga title every year with names on the roster like Ručinský or Hlaváč. So they were at the start of this season. But their play was really poor, they finished 11th after the regular season and they have to play another 12 games of play-outs with another 3 teams from the bottom of the league table.
Thumb up: HC Plzeň 1929Plzeň reached 96 points this season as well as the first team of the standings, Třinec, regardless they are ninth after the regular part of the 2010/11 season. Why? As we informed you in the freestanding article, Plzeň was, as well as Mladá Boleslav and Kladno, penalized with a point reduction because of wrongly registered players on its roster. But Plzeň as the only team from all the penalized clubs didn´t lay their heads and continued with great performances on the ice that brought impressive results and finally the 9th spot in the standings which means advancement to the playoffs preliminary round.
Thumb down: Stanislav Šulc (head of APK) and all the APKStanislav Šulc - APK chief (Association of Czech Professional Ice Hockey clubs is managing the Czech Extaliga competition) resolved the case with Plzeň´s, Boleslav´s and Kladno´s administrative failures by point reductions and highly affected all the 2010/11 Czech Extraliga season. Regarding to valid APK rules there were a few other possible solutions but Šulc picked out this one and a slide into Czech hockey public´s unpopularity that escalated after Tomáš Vlasák´s (forward of Plzeň) penalization for profaning the Extaliga name (he told that Šulc isn´t trustable person).
The biggest up rise of the season: HC Plzeň 1929From the same reason as we selected Plzeň in the "Thumb up" category, this club is also marked as the biggest up rise of the season. After the penalization they fell to the 12th spot, but they kept good results and up rose to the 9th place that guaranteed the playoffs qualification round for them.
The biggest fall of the season: HC Kometa BrnoFor one period, Kometa was a member of the leading group of table. Brno was moving between the second and fourth place on the until the start of December 2010, but after that the big fall started. Kometa players lost everything they could (from Dec 7, they earned 14 points in 23 games) and after the final whistle of the penult round the last hope for playoffs qualification was gone - Although Brno won the game in Kladno (5-1) it was already certain that no result in the last round would be enough to jump past Karlovy Vary, the last playoffs ticket holder. Brno finished the regular season on the 11th place and has to join the play-outs.
The most valuable player of the season: Tomáš Vlasák (Plzeň)Tomáš Vlasák is the real leader of his team. Together with Martin Straka makes the strongest couple in the league. Although his team was penalized by points reduction, he still continued to earn points and at the end of the regular season he wins 3 out of 6 main individual statistics tables (the most goals, the most points, the most PP goals).
