USA defeated Switzerland to win Group A and Sweden beat Canada in a shootout to finish first in Group B.
On the first game of New Year's Eve Finland beat Slovakia
6-0. A result that would have been enough for the group win if USA had lost to Switzerland. Finland scored three goals in each of the first two periods. Erik Haula got two goals. Both Finnish goalies, Joni Ortio and Sami Aittokallio, were used and both remained unbeaten.
Sweden won Group B thanks to a
6-5 (SO) win against Canada in the decisive game. Oscar Lindberg and Anton Lander scored in the shootout for Sweden and the Swedish goalie Robin Lehner saves the penalty shots from Ryan Ellis and Brayden Schenn.
USA beat Switzerland
2-1 to win Group A. Switzerland took the lead after seven minutes when Inti Pestoni beat Jack Campbell in the American net. Three minutes later Chris Kreider tied the game. Mitch Callahan scored the game-winning goal at 33:53.
The game between Czech Republic and Russia was extremely important. The winner would qualify for the quarter finals while the loser have to play relegation games. The Czechs scored the first goal but Russia replied with four goals in the first period. The final score was
8-3 in favor ov the Russians.
The quarter finals will be played according to this. Sweden and USA are already qualified for the semi finals.
