An impressive victory for Russia in their home tournament. Czech Republic finished second, Sweden third and Finland in last place.
Russia easily won their own tournament Channel One Cup with three straight wins. Today they defeated Finland 6-2. After goals from Radulov and Pyörälä the game was tied after 20 minutes. 20 minutes later Russia had the lead 6-1 after five unanswered goals.
Aleksei Kaygorodov, Sergei Mozyakin scored one goal each before Gennadi Churilov added two. Three of the second period goals were power play goals. Ville Viitaluoma gave the Finns a consulation goal late in the game but this was a bad tournament for the Lions.
For Russia it was an impressive tournament and they have somehting to build upon until the World Championships this spring.
In game two of the day the second place was at stake, it was the Czech Republic who took after coming back from 0-1 to win 4-1. Dick Axelsson gave Sweden the lead on a breakaway halfway through the first period. Axelsson found the next with a controlled backhand shot. Later he got another breakaway but was slashed from behind and was given a penalty shot. He took the shot himself but had a poor effort and didn't help Sweden come back after three straight Czech goals.
Jakub Klepis tied the game with a onetimer after quick Czech passes. Ivan Rachunek gave the Czechs the lead just after the halfway mark. Rolinek made it 3-1 with an easy tap in from close range on a power play at 46:20. With less than three minutes left to play Josef Vasicek made the final score 4-1 with an empty net goal.
