Estonian U18 team undefeated in Novi Sad

28 Mar 2012 | Henrik Lundqvist

With 9 goals and 6 assists Pavel Kulakov lead Estonia to a tournament victory in the World U18 Championship Division 2B in Novi Sad, Serbia.

Estonia won 3 points in each of the games against Australia, Iceland, Serbia and Spain. Strangely, the only game in which they lost a point was to China who finished last to face relegation.

Estonia won 5 points ahead of Serbia who finished second, but the tournament win wasn’t as secure as it seemed. If Spain had beaten Estonia on the last day they would have won it instead.

Spain started that tournament deciding game best and at 13:55 Carlos Rivero gave them the lead. Spain kept that lead until 43:27 when Ilja Semonin tied it. Dmitri Vinogradov took Estonia to the lead seven minutes later and then the tournament’s top scorer Pavel Kulakov made it 3-1 a minute later. Konstantin Lubobrabets scored 4-1 at 54:26. Spain got a little hope back at 56:46 when Patricio Fuentes scored the second Spanish goal of the day but 90 seconds later Kulakov scores again to make it 5-2.

Estonia finished on top with 14 points to win promotion. Then followed Serbia (9), Spain (8), Iceland (7), Australia (4) and China (3).

The top scorer Pavel Kulakov was also named Best Forward. Estonia’s Aleksei Arno was named Best Goalkeeper while Serbias Ilija Uzelac got the Best Defenseman award.
