The DC Capitals were formed in 2010 as part of a cooperative effort by the two Tier I youth hockey organizations in the Potomac Valley Amateur Hockey Association -- Team Maryland and the Washington Little Capitals. The main focus of the DC Caps is to improve the training and competitive environment for 15-18-year-old players in the DC area while enhancing the scouting opportunities.
While Team Maryland and the WLC signed a three-year agreement to give the DC Capitals the time and space to form a program and gain traction, the DC Capitals operate as a completely independent non-profit organization. Neither Team Maryland nor the Little Caps control the DC Capitals and their hockey operations and decisions.
Both Tier I organizations feel the DC Capitals provide a stable situation in which players can train and compete while finishing their high school academic careers in the DC area. The DC Capitals are committed to attending some of the top-scouted events in the nation in order to further increase the visibility of the players. The DC Caps split their practices and games between Virginia and Maryland and are set up to be equitable in terms of geography.
