Northern Stars were an ice hockey team, previously known as the Newcastle ENL Vipers. They changed names from the Vipers to the Northern Stars in 2010. The team competed in the English National Hockey League North 1 and the NIHL. The team did not have a home ice pad due to Metro Radio Arena staff cancelling all of their home games, as the ice pad not been laid again due to extensive repair work that needed to be carried out. The Stars proceeded to play all of their games away for double points.
Prior to the 2011/12 season the Northern Stars merged with Billingham Bombers to form the Billingham Stars.
