Since the DEL is not under the administration of the German Ice Hockey Federation,
the league works independently. It is completly owned and operated by its member
teams. Each team must fulfill the DEL's basic requirements to remain in the league:
The League format depends on the number of participating teams. Primarily, the DEL
had 18 original members in the 1994-95 inaugural season. In 2010-11, the DEL
operated with 14 clubs. Usually, the teams are playing four times against each other
during the regular season (2 home and 2 away).
The DEL only admits one team of the 2nd Bundesliga (2nd Division) per season to
the league, unless the league strength falls below fourteen. In that case two teams could
be accepted. Since the 2006-07 season, no DEL team can be automatically relegated.
A team can only lose its league status through non-compliance with the leagues regulations.
The champion of the 2nd Division is allowed to promote to the DEL in case it fullfills the
basic league requirements (i.e. an arena that meets DEL standard)
The Deutsche Eishockey Liga (German Ice Hockey League, shortname DEL)
is Germany's elite professional ice hockey league.
The DEL was formed as a replacement for the Ice hockey
Bundesliga in 1994 modeled on the North American National Hockey League (NHL).
