Game recap

After an intense two nights of playoff hockey, no-one could accuse either the Devils or Steelers players of not having left everything on the ice. Both sides led on aggregate during this game which proved to be another enthralling encounter live on FreeSports.

Sheffield’s undoing this season in Cardiff has been getting off to bad starts, and happened again as the visitors were pinned in their own zone for large parts of the opening exchanges. That pressure eventually took its toll and Sean Bentivoglio scored the opening goal after Joey Martin drove to the net and put it on his teammate’s stick in front. Level on aggregate, the Devils then took the overall lead with 2:14 left in the opening period, Martin this time jabbing in from close range on the powerplay as the Devils led 2-0 on the night after 20 minutes.

Cardiff conceded shorthanded in the first leg, and did so again this evening – Jordan Owens beating Ben Bowns high blocker side 1:43 into period two to level things up on aggregate. Mark Richardson was given too much time and space to shoot on Jackson Whistle, and follow up on the rebound to put home his own rebound with 27:37 played as the Devils went back ahead overall.

However the home side were rocked by two quick Steelers’ goals at the start of the third that turned the series on its head. Eric Neiley got the first 26 seconds in to make it level on aggregate, and then Jordan Owens scored at 41:13 to give the Steelers the overall lead as the game went to 3-3 on the night.

The Devils though responded with four goals in the final ten and a half minutes. Layne Ulmer brought the aggregate score level at 49:40 on the powerplay, Matthew Myers’ pass across the face of the goal somehow squirmed between Whistle’s pads and into the net 39 seconds later – the goal was reviewed for possible goaltender interference, but awarded. Martin moved the Devils out to two ahead on aggregate when he pounced on a rebound at 53:21, and the forward then made it a hat-trick with three seconds to go to confirm the 7-3 win on the night.
