Game recap

Belfast have done everything in their control to try and win the league title, after beating a battling Dundee side tonight at the SSE Arena in their final game of the regular season. The Giants lead the league by virtue of a better tie-break record over Cardiff, but the Devils have one game still left to play.

Things started in the best possible way for the Giants, who went ahead inside the opening minute – Darcy Murphy finding the target from a tight angle after only 52 seconds. With 19 minutes left in the opening period, the crowd rose to their feet to honour Colin Shields who will retire at the end of this season in a superb tribute to the British forward.

Dundee however struck back just over five minutes later as Charles Corcoran finished from Matt Bissonnette’s pass after a turnover behind the net at 5:57. Jonathan Boxill put the Giants back ahead by converting a rebound at 8:37, and 38 seconds alter it was 3-1 Kyle Baun followed up his own shot to put the rebound home.

However, Dundee weren’t in any mood to go away and were level before the period was over. Matt Marquardt pulled it back to 3-2 as he shot high past Beskorowany from the back post, while Jordan Cownie then tied the game at 15:45 as he shot five-hole from the blueline.

Darcy Murphy’s wrist shot high over Sjögren put the Giants back ahead at 27:47, but again the Stars were able to draw level before the period was over – this time it was Corcoran at the back post having two goes at the rebound to equalise for Dundee.

The hosts went back ahead early in period three when Patrick Dwyer struck at 46:46, and while the Starts tried everything they could to tie the game up – including pulling the goalie in the final stages – but Baun added an insurance goal with the empty net to take an important win.
