Game recap

In the ‘must win’ game for both teams, Coventry took their first win in Dundee of the season as they beat the Stars by two.

In a cagey opening period the two teams traded 14 shots but without a breakthrough. The deadlock was eventually broken past the halfway mark of the game, Tim Crowder was able to tip Nicolai Bryhnisveen’s shot in front of Pontus Sjögren for the lead at 32:01. Matt Bissonnette, scorer of the OT winner on Sunday in Nottingham, levelled the game at 35:40, but by 37:07 the Blaze were back in front thanks to Ross Venus.

Midway through the final period the Blaze edged closer to the all-important win, a turnover in the Star’ zone allowing the puck to be worked and then passed in front to a grateful Ben Lake who made no mistake with the finish. There was hope for the Stars with 4:14 to play, Matt Marquardt’s pass from behind the goal line allowed Brian Hart to shoot home from close range. With Sjögren pulled for the extra attacker the Stars did have chances to tie things up, the best falling to Hart and Drydn Dow on the same play, but neither could beat Matt Hackett.

Kevin Morris sealed the Blaze’s win with an empty-netter with 21 seconds to go – confirming that, for now, Coventry go two points ahead of Manchester Storm in the final playoff place.
