Game recap

It’s fair to say that games involving Coventry usually involve goals of late, but tonight they were on the better side of a narrow scoreline in Manchester.

The Blaze must have thought a repeat of last night’s defeat to the Storm was on the cards as they went down two goals in the opening period – Ciaran Long got the ball rolling shorthanded at 5:39, before Dane Byers doubled the hosts’ lead at 14:22 on the powerplay. Shawn Pauly’s goal with 1:09 to play in the period meant the Blaze started the next 20 minutes only a goal behind, and they wasted no time in getting back on level terms – Tim Crowder the scorer at 21:41.

Although the Storm where back ahead before the midpoint of the game through the ‘Player of Week 19’ Dallas Ehrhardt, a bad line change allowed the Blaze to break and Thom Flodqvist – Player of Week 18 – to fire past Ginn and level the scores at 32:39.

No goals in the third period meant the game went to overtime. A high-sticking minor on Riley Stadel gave the Blaze an powerplay opportunity that they didn’t miss, Alex Nikiforuk with the winner at 62:58. An important point for the Storm who stay in the playoff places, but more so for the Blaze whose win keeps them only a point behind.
