Game recap

Just as in midweek, Sheffield Steelers won a narrow victory over Guildford Flames in a hard-fought encounter.

After a tight opening period with chances for both teams, including Tanner Eberle hitting the post on a shorthanded breakaway, the Steelers eventually took the lead with 15:23 played – Jonas Westerling shooting from what looked like an impossible angle to find the net. 2:35 into period two Anthony DeLuca’s wrap-around attempt got a fortunate bounce of Jesse Craige’s skate to deflect into the net and put the hosts two up. Guildford got themselves back into the game just past the halfway mark on their fifth powerplay of the game as Calle Ackered’s slapshot flew past Jackson Whistle.

A fantastic pass from DeLuca found Evan McGrath with a half-open goal to aim at and slot home to score and put the Steelers 3-1 up with 35:06 on the board. However the Flames again got themselves back to within one, Ackered again on the powerplay with a rocket of a shot timed at 37:46.

The Flames would in the end look back at missed opportunities on the powerplay as they could find a way past Whistle in the final period. The Steelers netminder pulled off a couple of excellent saves, while Chris Carrozzi’s glove save late on meant the Flames stayed in the game. With the goalie pulled, the Steelers had a couple of chances to make the victory more comfortable but couldn’t – however survived the late Flames pressure to take another valuable win.
