Asiago and Donbass qualify for the Continental Cup Super Final

Herning hosted group D and Donetsk group E of the third round of Continental Cup. Donetsk managed to win their group to qualify for the Super Final in Rouen, France. Herning ended third, one point behind group winners Asiago.

 
 
 
 
Donbass Donetsk of Ukraine was the only of the eight teams in the Continental Cup's third round to get a perfect record.

They won their three games against Liepaja (Latvia) 6-2, Cracovia (Poland) 3-1 and Rubin (Russia-VHL) 3-1. Rubian beat both Cracovia and Liepaja and finished second but only one team from the group could qualify for the Super Final. The final game between Donbas and Rubin was a close contest. Rubin pulled the goalie the final seconds and Sergei Piskunov could score 3-1 for Donbass in the empty net.

Group D in Herning, Denmark was closer. Herning beat Asiago 3-2 in overtime in the final game but that wasn't good enough. Had they scored during regulation instead they would have won the group. Now they finished third behind Asiago (Italy) and Dunaujvaros (Hungary). Sheffield  Steelers of Great Britain ended fourth.

Asiago opened with a 4-3 shootout win against Sheffield. In the second game they beat Dunaujvaros 3-2.

Best scorer of the third round was Asiago's Sean Bentivoglio who scored 5 of Asiago's 9 goals.

The Super Final of the Continental Cup is played in Rouen, France January 13-15 and besides Donbass Donetsk and HC Asiago also the host Rouen Dragons and the 2011 champion Yunost Minsk participates.
